things to see and do

Located midway between Bermagui on the coast, Tilba to the north and Bega to the south, Cobargo is the hub of the Sapphire Coast.

It is the ideal base to explore the area from. The Sapphire Coast area around Cobargo offers -

Untouched wilderness areas, such as the Wadbilliga National Park with its rugged mountain ranges and deep river valleys

Deepsea game fishing

Beach, estuary and freshwater fishing

Diving

Surf beaches

Whale watching

Canoeing

Spectacular golf courses

Bushwalking

Art galleries

Activities in and around Cobargo include -

the village itself

A 25m heated swimming pool, tennis, sports ground and regular pony club events are all on offer in Cobargo.

There is a picnic area and park right in town near the bridge. Situated on the banks of the Narira River, it is a pleasant vantage point from which to watch the activity of this busy town.

wadbilliga national park

West of Cobargo is the Wadbilliga National Park. Along the picturesque 20km drive is evidence of the early farms established by the pioneers of the district.

Cobargo is the point of departure for an investigation of this National Park with its rugged mountain ranges, wide plateaus, deep river valleys, wet sclerophyll forest, heathland, bogs and pockets of old growth rainforest.

This untouched wilderness area is home to 122 species of native birds as well as swamp wallabies, echidnae, possums, platypus, eastern grey kangaroos and wombats.

The most spectacular features of the park are probably Tuross Falls (35 metres) and the 5 km Tuross River Gorge. Both are on the western side of the park. The falls can be viewed from a 3 km walking track which departs from the Cascades camping area. From Cobargo follow Bourkes Rd through Yowrie and on to Lake Creek Camping Area by the Wadbiliga River. Several kilometres beyond this point is the highly scenic Wadbiliga Crossing Picnic Area. All three locations have toilets and picnic-barbecue facilities.

The parks' pristine state means that exploration is mostly by foot, and for experienced bushwalkers and naturalists who enjoy lengthy walks and are prepared for an overnight stay. Note that heavy rains can render roads and river crossings problematic so it is best to inquire about local conditions before setting off.

brogo dam

Brogo Dam is a bass fishing 'hot spot' and canoeing capital. It is south of Cobargo and is reached by turning west off the main Princes highway.

It offers picnic facilities and a ramp from which to launch your canoe or rowboat.

You can hire canoes to explore the dam and gain access to remote pockets of bush, teaming with wildlife. This is really getting away from it all!
